Omschrijving
Polychrome wooden sculpture of the so-called Black Madonna - Spanish school - 18th-19th century
It would benefit from a restoration

Polychrome wooden sculpture of the so-called Black Madonna, probably dating back to the 18th/19th century. It was found in Sardinia (Italy). Since the Templars (who were known to venerate the cult of the Great Mother) were on the island in the past, it is likely that this enigmatic figure has an esoteric symbolism. This sculpture of Madonna and Child was clearly made by the French school and is among the several images of the Black Virgin or Black Madonna. This holy figure, or at least its main structure, was carved out from a single wooden block. It has a polychrome coating applied on a preparatory layer, with gold leaf parts. This shows that during the past centuries the body of the sculpture was repainted. The paint layer currently has a few paint chips, a widespread craquelure and lacks of colour that show the preparatory layer. Wooden base was probably replaced at a later date. Please note the crown is missing, it was probably lost. Dimensions: 41

From a private collection following an inheritance distribution. Certification included pursuant to art. 64 D.L. January 22, 2004, no. 42 Law on Cultural Heritage and Landscape (Italy)
