Iker developed most of his sports career with Real Madrid CF, first with the youth teams and later, between 1999 and 2015, with the La Liga team. He was also the captain between 2010 and 2015. He amassed 725 appearances for Real Madrid, the second most in club history, only after the 741 Raúl González record.
He was a member of the Spain national team from 2000 to 2016, and the captain for ten years between 2006 and 2016. He is the most capped Spanish player of all time, with 167 appearances, and the seventh in the world. He led his national team to win the UEFA European Championship twice (2008, 2012) and the FIFA World Cup once (2010). That was the first time that a national team won three consecutive titles in history.
He was considered the best world goalkeeper by FIFA and UEFA for five years, through the FIFA FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year awards. He was also named IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper for five consecutive years, from 2008 to 2012. He also appeared in the Ballon d’Or shortlist of nominees every single year between 2007 and 2012.
