Zakpai Racing Mask - DAN - Ivory Coast
Provenance: private collection, France.
Dimensions: 23 x 14 cm.
Materials: wood, rope, cowry shells.
Certificate of authenticity: included.
African Dan masks present quite constant features, but these can vary depending on the regions. We can however constantly observe a quite flat face with a bulging forehead, half-closed, gaping or wide-open circular eyes, as we can note on this so-called Zakpei or Zakpai fire mask, and a little protruding mouth.
In this case, the imposing hairdo which accompanies the dancer still remains and is ornamented with cowry shells.
It is composed of non-raffia cord, which attests its authenticity. A band of white pigment envelops the eyes, in order to highlight the mask’s circumspect gaze. Wonderful ancient internal patina.
