Masker (ex Galerie Mazarine) - Hout - Mwana Pwo - Chokwe - Angola

Omschrijving
Masker (ex Galerie Mazarine) - Hout - Mwana Pwo - Chokwe - Angola
Midden 20e eeuw - Goede staat, gebruikt met enige tekenen van slijtage

Performed during initiation ceremonies for young men by the Chokwe of North-East Angola and Southern DR Congo, this mask portrays mwana pwo, an idealized beautiful young woman. While she symbolizes fecundity and the prominent role of women in a matrilineal society, the mask is actually worn by a disguised man wearing a tightly fitting bodysuit with wooden breasts. Her beauty is enhanced by her scarifications on the cheeks and the forehead. She is also wearing an intricate carved hairband. This example still has an intact hairdo of tight fiber knots.
On a custom base.
Provenance : Galerie Mazarine, Paris, (This gallery at Rue Mazarine 52 in the St Germain neighbourhood in Paris, was opened by Jean-Pierre Laprugne in the 70's and closed in 2005. His remaining collection was sold at Christie's in 2017), then private Austrian collection
