Magnificent “Feminine Songye-Kifwebe Mask” from the D.R Congo, recognisable by the absence of crest, exclusive to masculine masks.
Splendid patina of wear, this mask is worn by members of the Kifwebe society named “Basha Mensede”, during ceremonies which still currently take place.
These masks enable the wearers to enter in contact with the gods.
According to a myth, the striations would represent the path crossed by the first Songyes, from the original belly up to the light, and it evokes a labyrinth to the initiates.
