Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (pseudonym Louis de Marsalle, born May 6, 1880 in Aschaffenburg, † June 15, 1938 in Frauenkirch-Wildboden at Davos / Switzerland) was a German painter and graphic artist and is one of the most important representatives of Expressionism. Kirchner was a founding member of the artist group Brücke. In 1937, the National Socialists branded his works as "degenerate." Over 600 of these works were subsequently sold or destroyed. A year later he died from suicide.
