Closely related to the Luba with who they share common ancestors, the Songye live in the region of Shaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The top of the skull is topped by two birds and the face is covered with thin brown and white characteristic striations, this Kifwebe mask represents well its ethnic group.
This Kifwebe mask of the Songye was worn with a long costume and a long beard of natural fibres. These are used during important ceremonies. Masks, costumes and colours have a symbolic meaning. Colours indicate the characteristics of a new spirit.
