Fish Puppet
- BOZO ADAM - from Mali

This fish in painted wood is a puppet with articulated fins. We can find it among the Bozo, an ethnic group established in Mali and in Niger. Skilful fishermen, they are considered to be “the masters of the river”. There is a legend about the origin of this object. A Bozo fisherman would have been abducted by spirits of the bush. During his detention, the spirits taught him the art of puppets. At his return to the village, the fisherman visited the forgers and they began to establish together the craftsmanship of puppets. Bozo puppets are still used today for the celebration of good catches, during which they dance, accompanied by women’s chants and drums.

Collected in situ.
