Ju-Rô-jin, one of the seven gods of good fortune (Shichi-Fuku-jin), god of longevity, is an old man with a long beard and a solemn face.
He is represented here wearing his traditional, supposed to be transparent, cap. He is seated with his right hand on most probably a book that is here in lieu of the traditional scroll where elements of the destiny of all human beings arre registered. Looking at the balance and details of the piece, one realizes that the carver was really skilled.
Look at the expression on the face of the god, the details on the beard, the sophistication of the design of the kimono.
The signature of Shô-Zan can be found under the right leg, the himotoshi on the back of the god. According to Ueda Reikichi ( The Netsuke Handbook, page 285, Japan 1961), he worked between 1830 and 1867 and "carved mainly in wood, netsuke of Ju-Rô-jin, animals, and other objects. Some of his work is excellent".
