The Louis Vuitton tradition of the production of trunks precedes the foundation of the brand itself.
In 1837 16-year-old Louis Vuitton travelled to Paris on foot and began working as an apprentice for Monsieur Maréchal. At the time, the main means of transport were horse-drawn carriages, boats and trains and luggage was handled with little delicacy and care. As a result, travellers resorted to the aid of artisans to pack and protect their personal belongings.
At the Parisian studio of Monsieur Maréchal, Louis Vuitton soon became a highly regarded artisan. These were the origins of a highly specialized company and the start of a career in a sector based on an artisan's ability to customise their suitcases and trunks based on what their customers wanted. Louis Vuitton held this position for 17 years before opening his own shop at 4 Rue Neuve-des-Capucines, near Place Vendome.
