Libyan crystal is typically found in remote and inhospitable areas of the Great Sand Desert in Egypt, near the border with Libya. This is a pure silica crystal, formed at a high temperature due to the impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface.
The Libyan crystal has been used during the history of mankind for the manufacturing of hunting utensils and rudimentary tools by the ancient inhabitants of North Africa, though its fame as a gem comes from being used by Cleopatra or Tutankhamun in the making of their favourite jewellery.
