On offer here is a beautiful Buddha from the border region of India/Nepal.

Especially the fine craftsmanship of the face and the body posture draw all eyes.

The meaning:

This Buddha is the "Bhumisparsa Mudra or Earthen Buddha".

Buddha touches the ground with one hand and one hand lies in his lap, facing inwards.

By touching the ground this Buddha calls the Earth as witness for the truth of his words.

The origin of this Mudra is a legend that Buddha was able to resist the temptation of the demon Mara. Mara attempted to distract Buddha from his meditation by tempting him with worldly gains such as money, jewels or even his two beautiful daughters. The two daughters might have been incredibly beautiful, but this outer beauty had no correlation with their inner virtues. Accordingly, Buddha did not cease his meditation.

Incensed by Buddha, Mara attempted to drive Buddha away with the remark that he had no right to meditate in this place. Buddha, however, referenced his numerous righteous deeds and called upon the Earth as witness.

His victory over Mara allowed Buddha to keep the right to remain on Earth to further spread his teachings.
