Samuel Prout (1783-1852).
‘Scene di Vita Cittadina’.
Antique precious watercolour,
dating back to between 1840 and 1850.
Painting size: 290 x 395 cm.
Size with frame: 445 x 545 cm.

Beautiful vintage watercolour painting dating back to between 1840 and 1850. On the back are the labels of an earlier sale by Sotheby & Co. in 1969, at the Royal Watercolor Society Galleries. Samuel Prout was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting. Prout assumed the position of Official Painter specialising in watercolours under King George IV in 1829, and later under Queen Victoria. John Ruskin, whose work often emulated that of Prout, wrote in 1844: ‘Sometimes I get tired of Turner, but never of Prout’. His works are recognized throughout the world and also quoted over 30,000 euros.

The painting depicts many city life scenes typical of a large continental city of the period. The richness and attention to details make the work an object of undoubted value, as well as a painting of high value to collectors.
