Former Blaise Tribal Art, Brussels.

In a little house at the boundary of a Songye village, a ritual expert would create these figurines with protective powers.
Nkisi or Nkishi figurine with dimensions meant to protect a family, to provide general well-being and protection against illness, sorcery and war. When an imminent danger was dread, the owner would carry it around the house, in order to ward off evil.
The figurine’s magical power is here reinforced by the addition of accessories, such as a loincloth in fabric and especially metal nails inlaid on the head, intended to ward off lightning and misfortune.
Wonderful ancient patina of wear.
These sorts of nails were also used on pommels of many weapons at the late 19th century in Congo.
