This KLEIN-ADLER 1 with the serial number 122921 is from 1916 and was produced by the ADLER-WERKE Heinrich Kleyer AG in Frankfurt/Main.
It was built from 1912 as an alternative to the large office device ADLER 7.
Like the ADLER 7 it worked with the so-called “bumper bar technique” with double switch and a 3-row QWERTZ keyboard. The type bars glide over a hardened steel plate and hit the paper in front of the roller, so the text is immediately visible.
The KLEIN-ADLER 1 was one of the first portable typewriters and was very popular due to its low weight, its robustness and size. It was also used, among others, in WWI by the army and also by war reporters.
This device is visually in a good condition but needs some attention, the cover image and the labels have partly been preserved. You can still write with it, all keys work, the ink ribbon and cover are missing
