This collection shows a variety of traditional shapes used for centuries in the Himalayan mountains. Some have a deep patina and all show the signs of years of use. The amulets were purchased in Kabul in the 1970’s, dating from the early 1900’s or earlier.
Such amulets were bound around an animal’s neck in order to protect it from the evil eye and illness. Some amulets are carved with luck and fertility symbols or have blessed quotations inserted in the wood, closed-off with a wooden peg (some missing, see pictures for more details).
