A MUSUEUM QUALITY OF LARGE AND MASSIVE LIMESTONE HEAD OF GUANYIN
MING, China, 1368-1644 or earlier.
The stone assertively carved with the Bodhisattva in contrast showing a gracious and peaceful expression, the hair bound together towards a high chignon, above a flower tiara with flaming ear-caps to each side.
Early 15th century - C.1425
The stone has suffered extensive wear, weathering and calcification but developed an exquisite natural patina at the same time.
There are losses, dents, scratches and a circumferential fissure around the neck, all as visible on the photos.
Remainder of old paste to underside, likely because the head was once attached to a later base.
