The sculpture-masks were created by the Yup’ik who live on the southwest coast of Alaska.
Mainly a people of fishermen, the Yup’ik have carved masks, attesting of the essential role of the sea within their beliefs and imaginations. These masks which could only be understood by shamans, mainly serve to favour successful fishing. A patina of wear increases the emotion we can see on the face. Crowned with rush supporting the two hands and the two paddles.
