Songye fetish figures are numerous and vary normally in size from 10 to 150 cm. They are usually male and stand on a circular base, have an elongated torso framed by set-apart arms and their hands rest on their abdomen. Their enlarged head has a square or pointed chin, an open mouth and a triangular nose set between enlarged globular eyes. Strips of metal, nails are sometimes applied over the face which counteract evil spirits and aggressors and channel lightning against them. Large fetish figures, like this specific one, protect entire villages and are kept in special huts.
Good condition with traces of tribal use. The figure contains some aging cracks and one bone on the right cheek is missing. Beautifully decorated with copper plates and animal teeth. The figure holds 3 small Songye figure around it`s body.
