Masker - Hout - Catalogué et expertisé - Igala - Nigeria
Begin 20e eeuw - Goed

Dance Mask, Igala culture, Nigeria. Height: 37 cm.

Magnificent and rare Igala mask from Nigeria, from the early 20th century. The style is quite rare and little documented. The facial expression is smooth and peaceful, with a touch of naivety. The mask seems to be animated, that is because of the virtuosity of the sculptor who has created it. Its shape, colours and strength confer a solar presence to it. Please note that there are two holes on the top of the forehead, and on the lower part, little nails are forming a half-circle. The wood is ancient and oxidised, the mask was worn several times. A wonderful, ancient and authentic piece of collection, appraised and catalogued in the early 20th century.

Please note the striking resemblance of this mask with the work of Picasso, entitled “Les Faunes”. Some representations of the Minotaur are aesthetically very close to this mask. Have a look at the pictures.

The mask was reproduced on the cover of the sales catalogue Herbette, 2011. Lot 130 BIS, estimation 4000/6000€. Appraised by S. Reynes. Have a look at the pictures.
