Beautiful half plate ambrotype portrait of a distinguished gentleman, housed in a leather case (1860s).
This is a fine example of a heavy double glass ambrotype, with the glass plate that carries the image being fixed/glued to a second glass plate to hermetically seal the image from air. In great condition, no air bubbles nor any cracks whatsoever. The image does not have black backing, it is transparent and can be viewed from both sides (which would make it perfect to house in a Brady style flipcase). I have put a black japanned aluminum sheet behind the image for viewing.
The image is housed in a leather case, with a nicely decorated heavy brass mat, stamped along the opening edge, and a perimeter brass preserver. The cases’ hinge has split, with separated front and back lid, but that could be easily repaired.
The image is in great condition ; the gentleman's portrait is clear and sharp. The leather case has some condition issues (split hinge) as noted above.
