Renzo Cordiviola
Was born in Parma in 1910 and he died in Genoa in 2000. Moving to Genoa in 1912, he became a loving and passionate son and cantor of this city, as can be seen in the note below, dedicated to him by Angelo Valcarenghi. He mainly trained as a self-taught artist, although he did attend some private classes.
In 1928 he began working in the Monguzzi engraving and chalcography workshop, where he remained for 5 years. This experience left a profound mark on his artistic education, as can be seen from his works, not only from the various and interesting graphic ones, but also from his paintings. However, he abandoned that profession to devote himself to painting, using various techniques, mainly oil and tempera, but also watercolour and inks. This painter became very dear to the inhabitants of Genoa, both for the themes he dealt with and for his histrionic, almost theatrical personality. From the 1960s onwards he gained popularity and commercial success hardly found in other painters, especially in those who like him (a condition that characterizes most Ligurian artists) were not helped by art dealers but used to promote themselves only through their works, their charisma and with direct conversing with their audience. Cordiviola lived, albeit for a short time, in Paris and from this experience he drew inspiration for many of his works.
