Summary: L'Onanisme is a book about the diseases caused by masturbation which had a profound and lasting influence. The issue of masturbation was approached from a strictly medical point of view for the first time. Tissot used observation and logical reasoning and rejected acts of faith. However, behind this staunch rationalism was a religious morality, which was never explicitly expressed but which could be surmised through certain expressions, notably through the idea of "nature". The latter concept refers to both physical laws, moral laws and religious laws. If Tissot's medical discourse was more influential than previous religious and moral discourses, it is due to the rationality of his argument, which could lead to true internalisation of the message by the reader. The letters to Tissot show that patients did not see the prohibition of masturbation as coming from an external authority, but rather as coming from themselves. The relationship of power was no longer between two people, but between reason and the desires of a single individual "especially through the idea of "nature".

The author (1728-1797) was a famous Swiss doctor. He produced numerous works on a variety of topics, earning him a European reputation: "L'inoculation justifiée" (1754) was his first work, "L'Onanisme" published in 1760 was immediately translated into all languages and was reissued numerous times. "L'avis au peuple sur sa santé" (1761) received the same reception: it was the first time that a doctor invited his clients to do without his authority by giving them the means to treat themselves.

Apart from the flaws mentioned, this is a nice copy of this rare work.
