The painting is a great example of oil on canvas, depicting the lamentation over the Dead Christ. The composition develops around Christ’s body after his deposition from the cross: on the top are Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who had to remove the nails from Jesus’s hands and feet respectively. The former is depicted in sumptuous robes and a turban, the latter is bearded but has his head covered. The body of Christ, lying on a white cloth, is supported by his mother Maria. The scene is completed by Mary of Magdala. The craquelure is in line with the date of the canvas. Wood’s lamp didn’t show any major restoration work.
