- Über die Waffensalbe -
2nd edition of this compilation. Two treatises by the Marburg mathematician and physician Rudolph Goclenius (1572-1621). The first deals with the Powder of sympathy (lat. unguentum armarium), when applied to a weapon, was supposed to heal the inflicted wounds by means of sympathetic remote action. The treatise is part of a series of pamphlets in which the author defends "medical magnetism" against criticism, especially from the Dutch Jesuit Jean Roberti. The second treatise concerns the luxury of meals.
Somewhat browned throughout, title and last page dusty, first 4 and last 3 sheets with expertly repaired loss at upper edge (without loss of text, see illustrations); pp. 7/8 just cut with loss of individual letters in marginal column (see illustration); pp. 1/2 and pp. 169/170 with improper repair in fold, therefore shaded with glue; pp. 43-73 with annotations by a 17th-century hand.
In a handsome 20th century marbled paper binding with endpapers of the same paper and a bookmark. Overall a fine, well-kept copy of the sought-after work.
Like all writings on powder of sympathy of the greatest rarity.
