Geïllustreerd, Muziek, Wetenschap (algemeen) - Aantal: 1 - Boek

Folio (32 x 22.2 cm) 2 volumes in a single book. Antique stiff-board parchment binding, threads and embossed decoration on the covers. I: 12 sheets, including the title page, frontispiece and portrait, 690 pp., 12 sheets, II: Title page and frontispiece, 462 pp., 6 sheets. With 19 copper engraved PLATES and numerous wood engravings. Two paper patches on the cover of the first volume and another on the second volume, the back cover patches show the appearance seen in the photograph, somewhat affected the text of the synopsis. The patching was probably made to cover up some previous ex libris removed. First edition of one of the most amazing works of genius that was Kircher, always characterised by an innate desire to discover, for deciphering the mathematical nature of things and explaining everything through reproducible models despite lacking the tools and methodologies of modern science. Musurgia Universalis is a magnificent musical treatise, in which he not only proposes plans to build a water organ, write down the musical notes of birdsong, a giant mechanical ear connected to a talking statue to scare ... but studies the composition of the human ear, compared to that of different animals. Kircher concluded that sound did not exist by itself, but that it was the resonance within the ear that formed the sound. Clean specimen with beautiful vintage binding, somewhat open on the spine, in the top joint.
