Facsimile of one of the most valuable zoological manuscripts from the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Complete, true-to-original facsimile edition of the 1460 manuscript. Around 1550, a total of 496 colourful, realistic pictures of animals were added to the text, some of which are decorated with gold and silver elements. The Latin text by the humanist Petrus Candidus describes the natural history and life of animals with realistic depictions of animals. This beautiful work was originally commissioned by Ludovico Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua and animal lover.
Facsimile volume: Blind embossed, very nice red-brown original leather binding with 4 frets. Format: approx. 27.5 x 21 cm.
Commentary or introductory volume: Original green cardboard binding with golden spine illustration. 213 pages with 31 partly full-page illustrations. Format: approx. 27 x 20 cm.
Jewellery box: Both volumes are in a velvet-lined imitation leather case with a decorative leather application (depiction of a unicorn or dragon-like creature) on the cover.
