35 issues of the Satirical magazine "Le Don Quichote" bound together in a green quarter leather binding.
Runs from issue 966 - 1st January 1893
through to issue 999 - 17th September 1893. Each issue is 4 pages long, with a large coloured lithograph / cartoon as the front page.
The green binding is rather rubbed, particularly to the spine, and with loss of most colour to the spine (where leather rubbed away). The binding has cracked to the front hinge, and the first issue is detached, with creasing to the front cover.
The rest of the issues are firmly held, and in good condition, with some darkening, and a small amount of chipping and closed tears to the edges only.
Gilbert Martin 1839-1905, was a French caricaturist. He was one of the few caricaturists of his generation not to be known by a pen name.
In 1871, Gilbert-Martin moved to Bordeaux . In 1874, he drew a few caricatures of Bordeaux journalists in "The Incredible Illustrated" before founding a new satirical and political weekly, "Le Don Quichotte" , the first number of which was dated June 26 1874. In addition to the caricatures on the front page, he wrote there, under the pen names "Louis Lemaire" and "Tribelg" (Gilbert's anagram), chronicles, poems, theatrical reviews as well as satirical announcements. Among the collaborators of Don Quixote , we find in particular Henri Aimel , Charles Monselet , Aurélien Scholl and Pauline Savari.
The newspaper particularly distinguished itself on the occasion of the crisis of May 16, 1877 , fighting against the prefect of the Moral Order regime , Jacques de Tracy, whom he ridiculed by making him seize a clysopompe ( enema instrument). This republican activism was worth eleven convictions, including three prison sentences, to Gilbert-Martin, who was then also the editor-in-chief of a republican daily, Le Bordelais , “rapid newspaper”. The Don Quixote who mocked MP Bonapartist local Ernest Dréolle , Gilbert Martin faces the latter November 27, 1878, during a pistol duel at Plessis-Piquet , in which the two men leave unscathed. After the disappearance of Bordeaux , Gilbert-Martin entered La Victoire , where his colleagues were Aimel and Gambier.
