It played an active part in the spread of a desire for scientific study in the 18th century.
It is, however, far from reflecting the “spirit of the Enlightenment” that would reign supreme in Diderot and Alembert’s, “La grande Encyclopédie: "Abbé Pluche, speaking of subjects of which he knew little, references the Bible and mocks Newton’s theories.
If not for this, he could almost be Louis Figuier’s predecessor, whose curiosity for science and technology he mirrored.
