Ntekpe Figurine, Ibo culture, Nigeria
Height 61 cm; Length 34 cm; Width 20 cm.
Magnificent figurine in terracotta, named Ntekpe, from the Ibo of Nigeria. These statuettes were placed in family altars, their functions were to protect the house and its inhabitants. The figure is sensitive and powerful, an astonishing combination of smoothness and strength. The position of the body, the hands on the knees, in a calm and serene waiting position, contrasting with the facial expression, an open mouth showing the teeth, expressing another emotion, entertaining this figure’s ambiguity. The overall is perfectly harmonious, the artist knew how to bring life to his work, making us feel emotions. With a few restorations on the arms and on the left wrist. The whole is solid, without crack. Wonderful ancient patina. This is a beautiful, ancient and authentic piece. Around 1940.
