Originally published serially in 90 parts in Journal des débats from 19 June 1842 until 15 October 1843, making it one of the first serial novels published in France.[1] It was an instant success and singlehandedly increased the circulation of Journal des débats. It founded the "city mysteries" genre, spawning many imitations.
Covers:
The books are uniformly bound in brown half calf with marble covered boards, spines divided into five compartments by raised bands, gilt lettering pieces on black leather label in compartment two, gilt numbering pieces in compartment three; joints with varying degrees of wear, one just starting, one tender, one becoming tender otherwise some wear; spines are faded or darkened, a couple beginning to craze; boards are scuffed and scraped at the leather edge and corners in varying degrees with the occasional minor mark or stain.
Inside:
In very good condition.
Barely a mark or blemish anywhere, any that do present are minor and to margins, end papers or titles.
Pages generally crisp, bright and unabused.
No rips or tears.
Front inner hinge volume 1 is very weak.
