African Ngil Justice Mask - FANG - Gabon
The justice mask in the traditional art of the Fang.
Among the Fang, as in any structured society, it was of utter importance to maintain order by the use of masks. In the Ngil society, the great initiate (Ngang), assisted by his officiants, crossed the villages, hidden behind a mask like this one. The wearers of this mask, hidden in their raffia clothing, would appear in the village at night, holding lightening torches in their hands. Their purpose was to track down trouble-makers, starting by those responsible of suspicious deaths. Their action mainly aimed persons guilty of witchcraft or criminals. Once the culprit was identified, he could be sentenced to death.
Unfortunately this African mask is not available. Our art gallery has other ones, can should certainly find your happiness on our website. Do not hesitate to contact us.
