Masker (1) - Hout - 52 cm - Kifwebe songye - Democratische Republike Congo

Omschrijving
Masker (1) - Hout - 52 cm - Kifwebe songye - Democratische Republike Congo
2e helft 20e eeuw - Goed

The name of the Kifwebe cult comes from a word meaning “mask” for the Songye. It is supposed to have started at the beginning of the previous century and its function would ensure social control over women and children. Willie Mestach divides the “classic” style of the Kifwebe into three categories: the masculine kilume, with a tall crest; the feminine kikashi, with a narrow crest or crestless; and the powerful kia ndoshi. Clearly, this is a feminine version. This kind of mask appeared accompanied by a mankishi, the first day of the new Moon.
We can find on this piece characteristic geometric elements, as well as black and white striations representing duality between life and death.
