African wooden ram mask from the Baule ethnic group in Côte d'Ivoire.
Tip of the left horn: see pictures.
Some of the Baule masks represent wild animals such as the buffalo, elephant, lion that are the most common.
On the contrary, it is much rarer to encounter domestic animals consecrated to the rank of a ritual mask.
Zoomorphic masks of animals like the ram, the goat, the horse, the rooster and the dog will nevertheless bring an additional symbolism to the masquerades, but can also represent the animal that will be sacrificed.
For example, the ram mask symbolises a great sexual reproductive power, even if this animal is often victim of sacrifices.
The mask comes with a handcrafted base made in Côte d'Ivoire.
This mask is representative of Baule art, with a lovely balance between the forms and the volumes, as well as finely carved details.
