Large and authentic polychrome Chinese painting depicting the buddha on a lotus throne, his hands in the Vitarka (teaching or discussion) mudra. The Vitarka is used with Buddhist iconography to symbolize the transmission of the dharma, or the truth teachings of the Buddha. In this mudra, the thumb and index fingers touch, creating a circle that symbolizes an uninterrupted flow of wisdom.
This painting, painted on cotton with natural pigments, shows signs of age and wear, has a little hole at the bottom ( see last photo) and dates from the early 20th century, about 100 years old. At the top and bottom of the painting bamboo sticks.
