Very large and heavy folio. [xx], 425, -[viii], 415, pages.
Complete, as issued, with 13 double-page or folding plates as well as the 2 volvelles (that is, moving parts), and frontispiece. There are also many full-page or almost full-page engravings in the text, and a large number of smaller woodcuts and engravings. The contemporary hard vellum binding is particularly rare for this title.
The offered copy collates with Klaas Hoogendoorn's 'Bibliography of the Exact Sciences in the Low Countries from ca. 1470 to the Golden Age (1700)', 2018.
This is the first (and only) edition in Dutch of this encyclopedic work on what lies beneath the surface of the earth. The 'Mundus Subterraneus' was arguably one of Kircher's most popular works. covering many branches of science, including physics, geography and chemistry. It is an extensively illustrated mixture of odd speculation with genuine insight. It includes chapters on the Andes mountains, the Iroquois Indians in Canada, the Strait of Magellan and gold & silver in America. Other topics include gravity, the moon, the sun, eclipses, ocean currents, subterranean waters and fires, meteorology, rivers and lakes, hydraulics, minerals and fossils, subterranean giants, beasts and demons, poisons, metallurgy and mining, alchemy, the universal seed and the generation of insects, herbs, astrological medicine, distillation and fireworks.
Unusually, the volvelles are in really excellent condition (one has string attachment a little loose) and have not been repaired or restored.
One beautifully hand coloured image stands out! The pages are generally (and unusually) clean, with a few showing some browning.
There are some small tears, but unimportant, and a small piece missing from the engraved title. Some old ownership names are inscribed.
The double page plates have been superbly set on tabs so that they open up fully.
1. Three folding plates have tears without loss (see photos).
2. The contemporary hard vellum binding is beautifully cold pressed. It has been stained, but in a way that is not unattractive. The main defect is that a portion of the vellum spine is missing and should be repaired. The spine has superb bands which give it character.
Overall, a superb and complete copy in unrestored condition. Exceedingly attractive, with lovely engraved plates and some stunning cartography and scenes of overground and underground. The moveable piece are a great bonus.
