Balloon Dog is one of the most striking works of the famous series Celebration, inaugurated by Jeff Koons in the early 1990s. The works in this series evoke certain moments of the year (holidays and anniversaries), but also pay tribute to the cycle of life. What else than a colourful balloon, to which we gave the instantly recognisable shape of a dog, to suggest the joy of childish feasts? In the eyes of the artist, this dog-shaped balloon speaks of celebration, childhood, colour and simplicity. But it’s also a Trojan horse. It’s a Trojan horse for the entire body of work.”
Balloon Dog has the depth of an archaic sculpture.
The original sculptures bearing this title are made of high precision stainless steel with mirror polished, covered with a transparent varnish blue, magenta, orange, red or yellow. Despite its three meters high and its weight of a ton, no detail was left out in the rendering of the shape of Balloon Dog. One finds the rigorous requirement of the artist, one of the most fascinating aspects of Koons' art, in the porcelain version of Balloon Dog (Yellow) which simulates stainless steel with the polished mirror of the monumental sculpture.
