Omschrijving
Florentine School of the XVII century. - Saint Appolonia
Olieverf op doek - Ongesigneerd - XVII cent.

Florentine School of the 17th century. Manner of Matteo Rosselli (1578 - 1650) "Saint Appolonia".

Saint Appolonia was one of a group of virgin martyrs who suffered in Alexandria during a local uprising against the Christians prior to the persecution of Decius.

The saint is depicted halfway up against a dark background holding in her right hand her attribute: the tongs (according to church tradition, her torture included having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered).

She is therefore considered the patron saint of dentists.

Cracks, few restorations. Canvas relined.

Measurements: 72 x 57 cm (and 97 x 82 x 6 cm with complementary frame).
