OUTSTANDING AND EXTREMELY RARE, WITH 57 RICHLY-ENGRAVED KLAUBER PLATES
[title-page continues]: Op Rym gestalt tot Geestelyk vermaak en vermeerdering der devotie tot de selve Alder-heyligste Maget en Moeder Godts Maria. Small 4to. (176) pp comprising (62) letterpress pages including title-page, interleaved with frontispiece and 56 numbered engraved plates (2 more than the Ghent and Turnhout copies!). Bound in 19th century quarter velum over marbled boards. All engraved leaves underlaid; a few plate numbers and captions trimmed. A very good copy, mainly clean and fresh with minimal foxing to a few plates.
Very rare sole edition of this Baroque adaptation of the Litany of Loreto, translated into Dutch and elaborated with poetic refrains alongside 57 emblematic engravings by the Brothers Klauber. The frontispiece alone is a tour-de-force of Marian imagery, incorporating at least 23 captioned symbols for the Blessed Virgin Mary in one rather compact design. Amaral (2011) notes the “high degree of popularity and prestige reached by the iconography of [the Klauber images] and by their deep and durable influence on religious imagery both in Europe and in America.” The original plates had first appeared for a Latin version of the litany in Augsburg in 1750; the present work evincing the trans-national prestige of the Klaubers and the demand for their work, which was also translated into German, French, and Italian.
The general compositional style of the plates juxtaposes an image of Mary in a Baroque cartouche above a vignette illustrating the particular virtue mentioned in her title; but the Klaubers are often wildly imaginative in their imagery and often choose to reject Biblical precedent. Thus, for the title of ‘Mirror of Justice’, Mary is seen in a pentagonal ‘picture frame’ adorned with mottoes, while below a naked savage, touched by an angel, contemplates himself in a mirror while an angry demon looks on. The illustration for ‘The Help of Christians’ interestingly depicts the Battle of Lepanto (1571), in which Mary miraculously interceded in order to guarantee victory against the Turks.
