From the series ‘Vedute di Roma disegnate e incise da Giambattista Piranesi Architetto Veneziano’ engraved in 1755.
The value and exceptional rarity of this work are evidenced by the fact that the images, being the work in its first print run, precede the definitive touches that Piranesi made on the sky and the addition of the tree on the right side, as well as the modification of the shaded side on the pyramid and the addition of the writings. This evidence is reported by Hind while Wilton-Ely supplements the description by contemplating the touch-ups on the sky and the addition of the tree (Rep: Taschen 884, Wilton-Ely 146, Focillon 810 (for the following runs), Hind 35 I/VI).
John Wilton-Ely, in the aforementioned bibliography, compares the work with the subject of the "Antichità Romane" reporting that:
“As Piranesi’s archaeological activities gained in importance, the focus on individual monuments of antiquity became predominant in his ‘Vedute di Roma’. Plenty of space is given to depicting the wild natural scenery, as well as the adjoining buildings near Porta San Paolo”.
The watermark "fleur-de-lys in a circle" is not easy to read due to the thickness of the sheet and refers to the very first Roman runs.
