Partly original edition containing the 4 volumes of supplements; indeed, the first three volumes (Volume 3 in deficit) were published for the first time in 1786.
The Memoirs of Saint-Simon were published rather late, and apart from a few excerpts published a little earlier, this is the first important edition of the Memoirs which definitively ranks the author among the major memorialists of Louis XIV; but it was only with the 1858 edition that Saint-Simon gained access to that of a great writer and major stylist, thanks to his finesse and psychological analysis mainly, two qualities that impressed Proust.
