Curious work on witchcraft and demonology among other subjects. About the author, we know he was born in Luna, in the province of Zaragoza, of noble origins, and studied Medicine. As a physician, he practiced in Barbastro and Zaragoza. He wrote La fábrica universal, dedicated to King Felipe IV, where he explains at length the metaphysical and disembodied nature of angels, with a brief nominative classification, the definition of Saint Damascene, and an explanation on some of their characteristics, functions and hierarchies. He also deals with the existence and characteristics of evil angels or demons by recounting the episode of Luzbel's rebellion and the celestial battle, and the later defeat of the rebellious angels. He includes a list, taken from the Bible, with the names and epithets of demons or ‘ungodly spirits’ detailing their specific roles, powers, classifications and activities, narrating some cases of their presence among people, including some personal experiences, which he considers to be true. It also details diabolical anecdotes to exemplify the actions of demons.
He defends the existence of warlocks and curses, warns of the deceptions and chatters that, in the eyes of the unwary, look like magical operations when in fact they come from natural causes. He emphasizes the ecclesiastical prohibition of sorcery and demonic contact, adding examples and judgments of authorities, but also recalling the Innocent VIII’s bull Summis desidering affectibus, quoting verbatim a constitution of Sixtus V, dated 1586, and referring to other inquisitorial determinations. He discusses witchcraft, broadening the critical outlook about the witch’s figure, repeating the misogynist and accusatory conceptualizations already established in the Malleus maleficarum. He is particularly interested in the witches’ contact with the devil through express agreement, so he explains exemplary cases and describes some details on the myth of the coven and how the devil deceives witches. He also talks about the corporeity of demons and whether these
they can beget or how carnal contacts are believed to be made with humans.
