First edition of this great classic on the city of Lyon by Jean de Saint Aubin (1588-1660) and the artist engraver from Lorraine, Israel Silvestre (1621-1691).

Famous publication respected especially for the plates drawn and engraved by Israel Silvestre around 1650 depicting views in perspective of Lyon: " Vue allegorique du Rhone et de la Saone Vue de Lion remontant par le Rhosne Vue de Lion du faubourg de la guillotière Vue du Quay des célestins Vue depuis le chemin neuf Vue despuis les chartreux Vue de Lyon en descendant par la Saone".

This imposing volume, in folio format, then containts “Histoire ecclesiastique de la ville de Lyon" Lyon Benoist Coral 1666".

Copy bound in a hardcover and restored during the 19th century. The frontispiece and the first two sheets have large pieces missing (see photos), the rest of the restorations are only on the margins and no texts or images are missing (about 20 ff).

Missing the title of the first text and the frontispiece of the second.

Dampstains and signs of handling mainly in the margins, more serious at the beginning (about) 60 sheets and sheets of the part with the plates (pp 263-364). The allegorical plate is the most damaged with a dampstain that overflows onto the image, the others have signs of handling in the margins and 3 with restorations in the margins. Very nice prints. Handwritten inscription in the margin of p337. Rare light foxing. Despite the defects, it is still fresh.

Very beautiful late 19th century binding in olive green calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands adorned with two red and green morocco labels and a rich decoration of fleurons in the compartments, arabesque friezes, raised bands adorned with roulettes, triple bands framing the covers, dentelle on the edges and turn-in, red edges. Minor abrasions on the boards, otherwise a very decorative binding that is sturdy and clean.

Israel Silvestre was appointed engraver and illustrator to the king in 1670 drawing mast to the Dauphin. Trained by Henriet, student of Callot, he stayed in Lyon in the middle of the 17th century and his plates were engraved from 1649 to 1652.
