Calfskin binding with the coat of arms of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans (1725-1785).

An interesting copy, from the library of Eugène Olivier (1881-1964), with his fencer's bookplate, engraved on wood by Rouveyre. Famous bibliophile, heraldist,
co-author
of the "Manuel de l'amateur des reliures armoriées françaises", the "Bible" on the
topic
known as "L'Olivier". A handwritten note opposite the endpaper.

Opposite is a biographical note and heraldic manuscript, most likely from the hand of Olivier.

Synonymes François: Leurs Différentes Significations. Volume 2, published in Liege by C. Plomteux in 1775, duodecimo (16.5x10cm) of 608pp.

Period brown full calfskin binding, ribbed spine adorned with two mosaicked red and green morocco labels and an elaborate gilded embossed motif, a well struck heraldic embossing in the centre of the covers.

A nice copy, restoration on the crowns, joints and corners, a fragment on the headcap is missing, the starts of cracks on the joints, the volume is nonetheless sound. Fresh and clean inside.

Bibliography:

This is the second volume alone of the main work by the grammarian Gabriel Girard (1677-1748). Girard's main objective is to prove that words that are considered synonymous nevertheless each have a very specific meaning.

This edition is followed by La prosodie françoise, published in 1767 and Essais de grammaire by Olivet.


Copy with the coat of arms of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans (1725-1785), Duke of Chartres, then Duke of Orléans in 1752. He was the grandson of the Regent and the grandfather of King Louis-Philippe I: after proving himself in the army (he took part in the Battle of Fontenoy), in 1752 he inherited the family fortune and the title of Duke of Orleans. He stayed away from the royal court all his life, preferring his residences in Saint-Cloud, the Palais-Royal, then Bagnolet and Raincy where he would spend the rest of his life with a passion for chemistry.
