The Gospels of Henry the Lion was a magnificent manuscript of the Bible. Among the illuminated manuscripts produced in Germany in the 12th century, this Bible deserves special rank, due to the preciousness of its decoration, the richness and variety of its pictorial and ornamental decoration. The highlight was the famous so-called crowning painting and, opposite it, the Maiestas Domini with the creation of the world.
The Gospels of Henry the Lion were intended by the Duke as a donation for the altar of Mary in the Brunswick Collegiate Church of St. Blasii (also known as Brunswick Cathedral, german: Braunschweiger Dom). It is considered the main work of Romanesque book illumination of the 12th century in northern Germany.
The manuscript with the text of the four Gospels was bought for Germany at Sotheby's auction house in London on 6 December 1983 for 32.5 million German marks. It was the most expensive book in the world until Bill Gates acquired a manuscript of Leonardo da Vinci ("Codex Hammer"). The Coron publishing house has designed the cassette to resemble the present binding of the manuscript from 1594. The four brass corner fittings - artistically significant pieces - are reproduced in original size.
The red velour box (dimensions approx. 42 x 34 cm) contains the following 10 large, colour full facsimile plates with 23.5 carat real gold plating:
- Die Widmung (fol. 19r)
- Kanontafel zum Markus- Evangelium (see 17ff.)
- Die Ahnen Christi (see 19ff.)
- Geburt Christi und Anbetung / Die Könige vor Herodes (see. 20r)
- Zierseite zum Matthäus-Evangelium (fol. 22v)
- Das Pfingstwunder (see 112ff.)
- Initialseite zum Lukasevangelium (see 113ff.)
- Das Krönungsbild (see 171ff.)
- Maiestas Domini (see 172r)
- Der Evangelist Johannes (see 172v)
The gilding of the leaves, which are individually mounted in passe-partouts, followed the principles of gold application on an off-white ground in the medieval monastery workshops.
For sale is issue no. 1318 of a strictly limited edition of 1980 copies.
Also included is the accompanying manuscript with 31 pages in the format ca. 40.5 x 32 cm with the description of the miniatures from the manuscript Cod. Guelf. 105 and a contribution by Christopher de Hamel.
