Period full suede binding.

A sound volume, aged leather with marks and stains, some peeling, a missing fragment on the headcap.

Inside in good condition, significant water stains at the front and end of the work which fades and reappears regularly, flowing into the text of about 300-350 pages. Some marginal wormholes, more pronounced on pages 380-450 (see photos). The legibility remains good.

François de Belleforest (Comminges 1530 - Paris 1583): Raised at the court of Marguerite de Navarre after the death of his father when he was seven. He travelled from Toulouse to Bordeaux and then to Paris, where he began a prolific career, which included translations of works by Boccaccio, Virgil and Demosthenes. The harangues are a huge collection of speeches delivered during military events, a valuable historical anthology even though Belleforest was removed from his post as historiographer to Henry III due to his inaccuracy.
The first edition dates from 1572, it contained 2 volumes in 1595, the second one only mentioned the author and the scientific publisher Pyrame de Candolle.

The Genevan printing house of the Vignon family: One must go back to Jean Crespin, father-in-law of Eustache de Vignon, to see the Aldine anchor used as a printer's mark (the first time on his Lexicon of 1554). The anchor wrapped with a snake and held by two hands emerging from the clouds symbolises Christ rescuing the lost (at sea).
