La Nouvelle Eurydice. Having learned of the death of his friend Thérèse, wife of Emmanuel, Stanislas leaves to seek her memory; he discovers, however, that she wasn’t she whom he thought he loved. Trying to separate lies from the truth in what he is told of her death, he detaches from her and begins to prefer Emmanuel. In this rewriting of the Orpheus myth, through death, one also loses the memory of the person whom we aren’t sure was even worth loving. There is an underlying theme of homosexuality, even though it isn’t explicit; and, the reader finds himself in the presence of a trio that haunted the author at this time: one woman between two men.
